Core Values: A Desire to Grow Professionally - A Passion for the Construction Industry - A Coachable Disposition for Instruction

ABOUT US

MCTI has a variety of partnership options to give individuals the best opportunity for success.

MCTI offers you the total package in education, complete with classroom instruction from passionate teachers, curricula accredited by NCCER (National Center for Construction Education and Research), and opportunity tracks for on-the-job-learning.

MCTI has several options for participation including apprenticeship, scholarship, and pay as you go.  The first two options require an application and selection process.

Apprenticeship:  MCTI partners with Hardy Corporation to give you the chance to earn while you learn. Because Hardy brings over 75 years of excellence in the installation of mechanical systems, you’ll be working with seasoned veterans of the craft in the field while you receive related instruction in the classroom (NCCER).  Apprenticeship is a four-year program empowering you to be certified as a skilled journey-worker at program completion through the U.S. Department of Labor.  This credential is transferable to any company across the United States! Apply to become an apprentice on our Apprenticeship page.

Scholarship:  Due to the gracious grant provisions from the Alabama Construction Industry Craft Training Board (ACICTB), MCTI has student positions available throughout our programs.  You receive the excellence of our classroom program at NO CHARGE to you!  Additionally, classes are offered in the evenings as well as via distance learning providing you the chance to work during the day and gain advancement via education at night.

MEET OUR INSTRUCTORS
Derrick Billups
MCTI Executive Director

Derrick has worked in education for nearly 20 years.  During his tenure in public education, he has served as a teacher, coach, mentor, and administrator within school systems across the greater Birmingham area.  Additionally, he has worked in nonprofit and ecclesiastical settings developing educational programs to enhance individual and collective learning opportunities leading to greater access and achievement of college and career goals.

Derrick earned Bachelor of Science in Biology at the University of Alabama, Master of Divinity at Samford University, and Master of Educational Leadership at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Dale Robertson
NCCER Certified Piping Instructor

Dale brings with him over 42 years of industry experience. He has served as a Foreman, a Superintendent, and has been responsible for quality control.

In 1991 Dale worked with Rust International to start “Wheels of Learning,” which is now NCCER. He helped write a great deal of the welding curriculum still used by the NCCER today.

Dale has been teaching for over 28 years, not only because he enjoys it, but because believes in it. He loves inspiring young people to follow a process that will give them the skills to be successful.

Whether it’s in the shop or in the field, Dale admits it’s quite a challenge to train new workers on the job. Between tight deadlines and the need to get the job done safely and correctly, there is a short time to review what is being trained in the field. In MCTI there is a great deal of hands on training with plenty of time to review the work.

Dale said MCTI is the “best program I’ve had an opportunity to deal with.” Finally, there’s a place to receive the knowledge and experience needed to master your trade.

Steve Smith
Sheet Metal Instructor

Steve Smith entered the workforce in 1978. He attended a four year apprenticeship program for sheet metal. Throughout his career, he has mastered shop layout, fabrication, and field installation. His experience and education have given him the opportunity to act as a Lead Man and as a Foreman on many commercial and industrial jobs throughout the Southeast.

Above all of his personal accomplishments in the industry, Steve values his faith in Christ.

Matthew Sarver
NCCER Certified Instructor, HVAC and Electrical

Matthew has been in the construction industry for over 15 years and holds an Applied Science degree in HVAC/R Technology, an HVAC/R Contractors License, and an Electrical Contractors license. Over the course of his career, he has had the privilege of working with and learning from phenomenal professionals in the trades industry across Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina.

The driving force behind his career is to be as knowledgeable in the trades as possible, and to pass on that knowledge to future tradesmen so they can become the very best the industry has to offer.

Daniel Barber
Start-up Superintendent,

NCCER Certified Instructor

After 16 years in the construction industry, Daniel still has a great passion for his work.  Right out of high school, Daniel began working with Hardy’s refrigerant piping group. He eventually began helping the service group during slow times.  Daniel was intrigued by the work they were doing. After finally getting the opportunity to move into the service group, Daniel went to every training program he could, and he asked every question known to man about his trade. During this time, he had the privilege of being taught by the best-known service techs in this area.  Over the years, Daniel has gotten to travel all over the country doing jobs for Hardy and meeting some very interesting people along the way.  He is thankful and feels blessed to have been allowed to learn a skilled trade while he was young – not realizing how grateful he would be for the opportunities.

It is still fresh on his mind how scary a trade can be with limited knowledge. He contributes his success and knowledge to some of the best technicians in the industry. He wants to continue this tradition and has made it his goal to be the best leader and teacher possible. Daniel’s grandfather always instilled in him that a lion will never have to tell someone he’s a lion; therefore, he does not want to brag or boast – simply share the knowledge, lessons, and skills he has gained.   Daniel wants his legacy at MCTI to be the following:  leave the industry better than he found it, give more than he receives, and keep this trade fun and exciting for future generations.

Daniel possesses a love of learning, teaching, and mentoring. He wants people to be passionate and love the work they do while taking pride in what they do to see their legacy live on in others.
